You can’t stop the beat! In a show all about overcoming adversity, our actors have gotten a first-hand taste. With only 3 weeks until opening the opening of HAIRSPRAY, ACTS’ air conditioner decided it wanted to quit. So with box fans running, the cast rehearsed in the heat while the board scouted for a new location to host the musical. Thankfully for the show LaGrange High School was available to host in their theatre.
Principal players include Shauna Temple as Tracy Turnblad, John Paul Primeaux as Link Larkin, Casey Doucet as Edna Turnblad, Angela Thomas as Motormouth Maybelle, Corey Dotson as Seaweed J. Stubbs, and Kelly Rowland as Penny Lou Pingleton. Also featured are Paula McCain as Velma Von Tussle, Savannah Foreman as Amber Von Tussle, and Joseph Boyette as Corny Collins. The cast is diverse with teens and adults, from veteran performers to newcomers to the stage.
The story, based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, takes place in 1962 in Baltimore. The lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire -- to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her 'do! Fun fact - the part of Tracy’s mom, Edna, is always played by a man!
The curtain rises on HAIRSPRAY June 6 & 7 at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee performance on June 8 at 3 p.m. All performances are at LaGrange High School Theatre.
